It was a character in Henry James who exclaimed how surprising it was to find gardens in Venice. Yet from the early years of the Republic, garden (of all sorts, but especially botanical ones) were created and used as a fundamental part of Venetian culture.  It was only by the early 19th century that a "Public garden" was created - but not by the Venetians and to the dismay of many there.
